JOEL SMITH
Joel Smith, Bob’s mirror twin, was a member of Laughter, Charmer and Smithfield Fair prior to going on to other artistic endeavors and the musical project, Diverse Peoples.
Joel was a major songwriter and singer/guitarist throughout Charmer’s history and in the early days of Smithfield Fair. Joel lived and worked for a time in Munich, Germany and speaks fluent German.
Though his degree is in art education (he worked on but never completed his Master of Arts), Joel is a military historian, gunsmith (emphasis on historic firearms), antique restorer and illustrator.
Joel’s ‘line drawings’ have adorned several Charmer albums, as well as the covers of the Stevenson Production book series.
Joel’s songs were featured on “Charmer: The Perfect Café”. He rejoins Smithfield Fair on stage periodically, and with Bob continues to perform as Diverse Peoples. Bob & Joel are partners in the
artistic cooperative, Saxon Guild – located on Inglewood Plantation in Alexandria, Louisiana, where they are known for high-quality art and antique restoration, as well as various other artistic
endeavors.
INSTRUMENTS: Joel’s main guitar has long been a 1976 Guild G-37B, mounted with a Shure SM-ll microphone. This guitar was pictured on the cover of “Walking Through This World” and
is set-up and maintained by Holger Notzel of Riverfront Music in Baton Rouge, who also does all the group’s set-up, maintenance and luthier work. (Photo by T.J. Shuflin - 2010)
